Review: The Body in the Library by Agatha Christie

Genre: Mystery

Rating: 3.0/4.0 stars

Main Takeaway: Not my favorite Christie, but still an entertaining mystery with a great reveal!

Agatha Christie is my favorite author. Ever.

I love the way she constructs such unique characters. I love the way she makes the reader suspicious of everyone. I love the way she has the main character hold back their thoughts from the reader until the very end. And I love the ability she has to create such timeless crime novels. I’ve always been a loyal fan of Agatha Christie since I read my first Christie novel in high school, and I hope one day to be able to say I’ve read them all. So, I’ve made one of my reading goals for 2018 to read one Christie novel each month, February’s being The Body in the Library.

In The Body in the Library, Colonel and Mrs. Bantry wake one morning to find the body of a young, blonde girl dead on the floor of their library. While the Colonel promptly calls the police, Mrs. Bantry calls her friend Miss Marple, a local spinster with a cynical attitude towards humanity that allows her to discern facts which others may overlook. Miss Marple uses her cynicism, knowledge of local gossip, and insight into human nature to aide the police in solving the mystery of the unknown dead girl in the library.

The Body in the Library was my first Miss Marple novel, and it definitely was not what I expected. I’ve read a good number of Hercule Poirot novels, and I imagined that the Miss Marple novels would be similar in style. I was shocked to discover that most of the novel consisted of narration by the police investigators and did not involve Miss Marple.

I had hoped to see more of her character, but nonetheless I enjoyed the novel. It had all of the classic elements of a Christie novel that make the reader keep turning pages; it had unique and suspicious characters, plot twists and wow-moments, and of course the big reveal. The Body in the Library is a quick, inviting read that keeps the reader guessing; overall, it’s not my favorite Christie novel, but it is still an entertaining mystery with a series of plot twists and a great reveal!
